2011 CMA Award Winners

USA- Las Vegas, NV | Nov 11 2011 | (09:00:20 - EDT)

The 2011 Country Music Association Awards took place on November 9, 2011 and was filled with back to back performances from some of country music’s finest. Established acts hit the stage for great performances and the newcomers showed that they have what it takes to be in the business for a long time. Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood hosted the show, which boasted 29 different musical performances, countless cowboy hats, three fedoras and one camouflage blazer.

Vocal Group of the Year, Lady Antebellum, performed their single We Own The Night with the help of one or two–really about 30 other people on stage. Newcomers The Band Perry, who was big winners for the night, took the stage to perform their song All Your Life. Sugarland were joined onstage by Matt Nathanson for a gorgeous performance of the duet, Run. And American Idol season 10 winner Scotty McCreery appeared on stage for a rather short but sweet performance of his song Walk In The Country. Earlier in the night, Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton and Rascal Flatts with Natasha Bedingfield gave performances.

Taylor Swift debuted her song “Ours” while sitting on what appeared to be a used couch and wearing a pink sweater that I’m pretty sure is from Old Navy. This sounds like a criticism, but actually, I think it worked.  Swift often comes across as irritatingly polished. She’s like that straight-A honor student in high school who is so perfect you find yourself hating her out of spite. But she’s so nice that you feel guilty for hating her, and then you just hate her more for making you feel guilty. But then one day you hang out with her at her house — on her ratty couch while she’s wearing pajamas — and you realize that she’s actually not that bad. There’s a reason why Taylor Swift is so popular. She’s really good at what she does.

Taylor Swift lost in every category except for the big one: she took home Entertainer of the Year. On stage, she read her acceptance speech off her arm. In the end, the CMA Awards turned out to be a lot of flash and quite a bit of fun. Twenty-nine performers were a little much; at times it felt as if every single person who had ever recorded a country song had been invited on stage. But Underwood and Paisley made sure the audience had a good time. Actually, they were funnier than most hosts of higher profile awards shows.
