Ni Rong in America: Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter

USA- Boston, MA | Apr 6 2013 | (23:03:21 - EDT)

Ni Rong was born in Beijing China in 1957. She grew up in a Qin Dynasty courtyard, and went through the Culture Revolution during her elementary and high school years. The old and the post-communist eastern cultures influenced her mentality during her early stage of life.

After high school she went to the countryside and worked as a farmer for three years in a remote mountainous area. In 1977, after ten years of turmoil of Culture Revolution, she was fortunate to be one of 300,000 students accepted for college from among 6 million applicants.

In 1985 at the age of 28, she left her hometown Beijing to travel to the United States for graduate school education.

Ni has spent the second 28 years of her life in America. Where is home, and what home means are questions she lives with each day. How has life in this cross-cultured world and uprooted condition affected her sense of self and identity? And ultimately, what she is and who she is?

"In America: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter” is a series that investigates the Asian-American identity of the photographer through self-portraiture. The work is focused on her ongoing search for an emotional home and a sense of belonging. Through this body of work, she has made connections to her remote home in China and her new home in the land of freedom.

Ni Rong’s work reflects her sensibilities both in Eastern upbringing and Western influences, as well as her struggle and triumph while living in their crossroads.

Education, Exhibition and Awards

Ni Rong has taken numerous courses at the Maine Media Workshop. Her work has been exhibited at Photo LA, exhibited and recognized with awards in Florida, Maine, and The Lucie Foundation. It was included in the Maine Book, and also in “The View Project”, a book and national traveling exhibition in 2010 edited by photographer Joyce Tenneson.
