Frisbee Golf: The Game with Many Names

UK- Yorkshire | Aug 4 2012 | (23:33:49 - EDT)

Frisbee Golf is very popular with American youth, but the sport has been picking up speed on all ends of the globe. Known also as Disc Golf, Frolf, Gorf, and now in Yorkshire, Flat Cap Frisbee Golf can be added to the list.

The sport, which many a Yorkshireman had been hoping will feature in the Olympics, takes the traditional Tyke headwear and puts it to an altogether different use, being flung from tee to flag in a bid to complete a nine ‘hole’ course in the fewest possible number of throws.  First played at Helmsley Castle in 2005, 2012 is the first time that a dedicated flat cap Frisbee golf course will be established at Scarborough Castle – but for one day only!

“The flat cap is thought by many to be a classic symbol of Yorkshire culture, but this sport really puts a new spin on an old trend,” says English Heritage’s Area Manager for Yorkshire, Clea Warner.  “It has been fantastically popular at Helmsley Castle in the past, and we are confident that visitors to Scarborough will find it just as amusing – but players will have to take into account coastal breezes when they take aim this year!”

Although the sport involves the throwing of projectiles, the soft tweed of the caps makes them unlikely to cause damage to people should they go astray, making it a perfect sport for both young and old.  “We do have a stock of championship-quality flat-caps available for visitors to use, but of course, if they would prefer to bring their own caps, they would be more than welcome to do so,” adds Clea.

Mark your calendars for next year, Flat Cap Frisbee Golf Day is August 1. Plenty of time to work on your game.
