UNA Fashion Promotes Conscious Consumerism

Canada- Saskatoon, Saskatchewan | Oct 16 2012 | (22:58:23 - EDT)

Saskatoon-born University of Saskatchewan Alumni, Megan Doepker, is channeling her passion for economic development and entrepreneurship into the socially conscious fashion label - UNA Fashion.

The concept for UNA Fashion, and the philosophy to “Fashion the Change”, are the culmination of Megan’s extensive travels through Asia, Central America and India where she saw first-hand the impact of the disposable fashion industry, and the opportunity that existed to empower local artisans by providing access to international markets. It is the social impact and the chance to help foster a movement for conscious consumerism that Doepker is most proud of.

“We all have tremendous power; our choices as consumers can change the world," states Megan. She is turning to the power of crowds to launch the endeavor, using the increasingly popular ‘crowdfunding’ platform.

Crowdfunding is an alternative to mainstream financing options whereby individuals provide support to worthwhile start-ups by pledging their dollars – in return, these backers are delivered tangible rewards. Megan’s target of raising $5000 in 55 days on the popular Website, Indiegogo.com will power the first wave of fair trade products; locally sourced, hand crafted scarves and leather bags.

“It’s an exciting way to engage the community in helping bring my dream to life, and in return, our crowdfunding backers are the first to rock UNA’s great collection of hand loomed silk scarfs and eco-leather bags”, explains Doepker.

UNA’s debut collection is crafted in India using eco-friendly local silks, biodegradable leather and organic cotton by artisans in fair trade certified organizations. Doepker spent five months in India seeking out top-notch materials and organizations with meaningful missions. She describes the journey as challenging, but incredibly rewarding.

“Perseverance was crucial; it’s a must for any entrepreneur. It’s all worth it when you are working towards something you are truly passionate about”.
