Free China: The Courage to Believe

USA- Denver, CO | Aug 2 2012 | (23:03:12 - EDT)

After winning the inaugural Free Speech Award at American Insight's Free Speech Film Festival in Philadelphia in May, the documentary film "Free China: The Courage to Believe", will have its Denver premiere at the International Freethought Film Festival at the Denver Performing Arts Complex on Friday August 3, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. Following the screening will be a question and answer session with the film's producer, Kean Wong of NTD (New Tang Dynasty) Television.

Directed by Michael Perlman of "Tibet: Beyond Fear," the fifty-three minute documentary film examines the widespread human rights violation inside China - from forced abortions to live organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience - through the remarkable stories of best selling author Jennifer Zeng, a mother and former Communist Party member, and Dr. Charles Lee, an American Chinese businessman. Both Jennifer and Charles along with hundreds of thousands of peaceful citizens in China, were tortured and subjected to slave labor for their spiritual beliefs in the Falun Gong meditation practice.

In addition, the film documents specific U.S. companies that profit from enabling the Chinese leadership to suppress dissidents and sheds light on the recent lawsuit filed by the Human Rights Law Foundation against Cisco System for allegedly implementing an elaborate surveillance apparatus that has led to the detention and torture of many Chinese prisoners of conscience.

This timely film also sheds light on how anti-censorship Internet technologies and a re-emergence of spirituality and traditional values are bringing about a new China, one that can be free from the legacy of the most brutal dictatorship in history.

Karen Curry, former CNN New York Bureau Chief, praised the film as "Intensely compelling ...extraordinary." Margaret Chew Barringer, American Insight & Free Speech Film Festival founder, also remarked, "I hope this film changes our world."

Interviewees in the film include:

Hon. David Kilgour, Former Canadian Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific)

Rep. Chris Smith, US Congressman, Senior Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee (Chairman of its Africa, Global Health and Human Rights Subcommittee)

Ethan Gutmann, Author of "Losing The New China" and Contributor for The Asian Wall Street Journal
