SurrealScapes: Body Art Photography

USA- San Jose, CA | Aug 2 2012 | (23:07:52 - EDT)

Zaid Salman, an artist and photographer, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a hardcover book of his art: SurrealScapes - Body Art and Creative Photography. http://www.surrealscapes.net/kickstarter

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform focused on creative projects and over the past few years has become a popular vehicle for artists to obtain the support and funding they need to complete and display their works.

SurrealScapes is Salman's particular brand of body art and creative photography, where images are created by projecting 35mm slides onto live models and then photographing the result. "I've been doing this art for years and now I want to bring it out to a wide audience, but I want to do that in a way that's accessible to everyone. Fine artists and photographers usually sell individual prints of their work, but to collect a large body of work, one would need to purchase a lot of individual pieces. The book format makes a large cross-section of my work readily available at a reasonable price," says Salman.

Salman sees platforms like Kickstarter as driving significant changes in the way art is made and creative expression realized. Artists who previously might not have had the resources to express their vision now have a vehicle for appealing to the masses to obtain support for their endeavors.

He continues: "This book is about more than just showcasing art. To me, the making of this book is also a symbol for what Kickstarter now makes possible. The terms 'crowdsourcing' and 'crowdfunding' are used to describe what organizations like Kickstarter enable, but I prefer the term 'community creation' because that is indeed what it is: people coming together, from all over, in support of a single goal to enable the creation of something that everyone involved can appreciate and enjoy. I'm excited to be part of this new way to collaborate, because it means that I as an artist can get closer to the people who would enjoy the art that I make."
